Serengeti National Park

Tanzania's best-known park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the stage for the Great Migration, when more than a million wildebeest and several hundred thousand zebra move across the plains in an endless annual cycle. Beyond the migration, the Serengeti holds a year-round resident population of lion, leopard, cheetah, and elephant, with accommodation ranging from simple tented camps to full luxury lodges.

Ngorongoro Crater

The world's largest intact volcanic caldera formed when a large volcano collapsed in on itself around two to three million years ago. The crater floor holds one of the highest densities of large game anywhere in Africa, including a small population of black rhino, making it one of the most reliable places on the continent to see all of the Big Five in a single day.

Tarangire National Park

Known for its high density of elephants and its giant baobab trees, Tarangire sees a lower volume of visitors than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro while still delivering excellent game viewing, particularly along the Tarangire River during the dry season.

Lake Manyara National Park

A compact park built around the alkaline Lake Manyara, known for its tree-climbing lions and prolific birdlife — over 400 species have been recorded here, including large flamingo flocks when water levels are right.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Africa's highest peak and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano with three summit points — Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. A climb takes trekkers through five distinct ecological zones, from cultivated farmland at the base to alpine desert and, finally, snow at the summit.

Zanzibar

This semi-autonomous archipelago off Tanzania's coast pairs white sand beaches with the UNESCO-listed Stone Town, a historic port city of narrow streets, carved doorways, and centuries of Swahili, Arab, and Indian influence. It's the classic add-on to a mainland safari for travelers who want a few days to unwind by the Indian Ocean afterward.

Mafia Island

Quieter and less developed than Zanzibar, Mafia Island sits within a protected marine park on Tanzania's southern coast, known for its coral reefs and as one of the more reliable places in East Africa to swim alongside whale sharks in season.
