Best Time To Visit Tanzania

Tanzania's safari circuits run on two seasons, and the "best" time really depends on what you want to see.

The Dry Season: June Through October

The long dry season, from June through October, is the most reliable window for game viewing across Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. Vegetation thins out and animals concentrate around permanent water sources, making sightings easier and more predictable — this is also when the Serengeti's wildebeest and zebra herds push north toward the Mara River, with river crossings typically peaking between July and September.

Calving Season: January and February

A shorter dry spell in January and February offers a different draw: this is calving season on the southern Serengeti plains, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth within a few concentrated weeks, and predator action is close and constant. It's also one of the clearest windows for views of Kilimanjaro's summit, and a good time to combine a safari with a Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru trek before the mountain gets busier from June onward.

The Green Season: March Through May

The "green season" — roughly March through May — brings Tanzania's long rains. Parks are quieter, rates drop, and the landscape turns lush, though some roads become difficult and a handful of lodges close for the season. Lake Manyara and Tarangire remain rewarding through the rains for birdlife, with over 400 recorded species between them.

Zanzibar and the Coast

If your trip includes the coast, Zanzibar and the northern beaches are warm and swimmable most of the year, with the short rains in November and the long rains from March to May being the main periods to plan around.

There's no single correct month — a private, tailor-made itinerary can be built around whichever of these windows matches what you most want from Tanzania, whether that's migration river crossings, newborn wildlife on the southern plains, or a quieter, greener safari at a lower cost.
